The Consulate-General is a career Swedish post at the TCG Financial Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex — the modern central business district of Mumbai that hosts most of the major foreign career posts in the city alongside the Indian financial services sector, the National Stock Exchange, the Reserve Bank of India administrative offices, and the bulk of the Mumbai-based multinational corporate community. The Mumbai catchment is the operational anchor for Sweden's western Indian commercial relationship — Maharashtra (the Volvo Trucks Bengaluru-Pune supply chain reaches into the western Indian automotive cluster around Pune), Gujarat (Swedish industrial machinery and pulp-and-paper supply to the Indian western chemical, refining and ceramics belts), Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Goa (substantial Swedish long-stay community on the Goan coast). The post is led by a career Swedish Consul-General appointed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm. The Consulate-General serves the Swedish national community resident in the western Indian states — primarily the Swedish industrial-management community at the Pune and Mumbai operations of Atlas Copco, SKF, Volvo Buses, Volvo Trucks, Sandvik, ABB and Alfa Laval; the IKEA Mumbai retail and sourcing community; the H&M Mumbai sourcing-and-merchandising community; the substantial Swedish-Indian business consultants and lawyers community; and the long-stay Goan retiree community. Consular services for Swedish nationals — passport renewal, ID-card support, emergency consular assistance, civil-status notifications, voter-registration coordination — are processed at this office in coordination with the decisioning embassy in New Delhi.

The Consular function at Mumbai covers the substantial Swedish-national community in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa — registered Swedish residents in the western Indian catchment number in the high hundreds to low thousands, with the inbound business-traveller-and-tourist flow several times higher. Direct consular services available at the Consulate-General include Swedish passport renewal coordination with the embassy, emergency travel-certificate issuance for Swedish nationals who have lost their passports, certifications of signatures and copies, civil-status notification support, voter-registration coordination during Swedish election windows, and operational support for Swedish nationals in detention, hospitalisation or repatriation cases. The post is the on-the-ground front line for Swedish consular emergencies in the western Indian states — Mumbai's role as the principal entry point for Swedish business travellers and the substantial Swedish long-stay community on the Konkan and Goan coasts makes the Mumbai consular workload one of the busier consular files outside the Delhi embassy.

Mumbai and the broader western Indian commercial cluster (Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Goa) are the operational hub for most of Sweden's substantial industrial FDI in India. Atlas Copco's Pune manufacturing centre is one of the largest Atlas Copco operations outside Sweden; SKF's Pune, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad manufacturing operations make India among the top SKF global manufacturing footprints; Sandvik's Pune operations; Alfa Laval's Pune manufacturing and Indian regional headquarters; ABB's substantial Indian footprint across multiple western-state locations; and the IKEA Hyderabad-Mumbai-Bengaluru retail rollout combined with the substantial IKEA sourcing operation in the Indian textile-and-furniture supply chain. The Consulate-General supports Swedish investors looking at greenfield or brownfield expansion in the western Indian states — coordinating with state-level investment promotion agencies (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation MIDC, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation GIDC, Magnetic Maharashtra, the Pune-Pimpri-Chinchwad cluster authorities) and the Indian central government's Invest India platform. Indian outbound investment into Sweden from the western Indian commercial cluster — Indian IT-services majors expanding Swedish delivery centres, Indian pharmaceutical and chemicals groups establishing Swedish operations, occasional Indian industrial acquisitions — is supported by Business Sweden's Invest-in-Sweden function with the Mumbai office as the principal western India contact.

Mumbai is the principal Indian cinema, design, fashion and contemporary-arts city, and the Consulate-General supports a substantial Swedish-Indian cultural exchange in those sectors: Swedish Film Institute programming at the Mumbai Film Festival, Swedish-design participation in India Design Forum and the Mumbai contemporary-design events, Swedish-Indian performing-arts exchange anchored on the Mumbai musical-and-dance institutions (NCPA, Royal Opera House Mumbai), and the substantial Swedish-Indian publishing and translation collaboration. The Swedish Institute (Svenska Institutet) Mumbai programming supports the Swedish-Indian cultural sector with grants, residencies and exchange opportunities.
